I dont have a spinal cord injury, but I used to hang out with a girl who did (from an auto accident). I learned from her a lot about what its like to be paraplegic and in a wheelchair. Back in the 1980s, a lot less places had ramps or were accessible, and that was a problem for her. She liked to go to a live music venue which unfortunately had 3 steps to the entrance, and I volunteered to go with her and get her wheelchair up and down the steps. When she needed assistance she would ask, I didnt automatically assume she needed help as she was very independent, and had no issues transferring in and out of her wheelchair. .At first I didnt know that having a spinal cord injury meant anything other than she couldnt move her legs, and had to use a wheelchair but I learned there was so much more to it as time went on, especially issues with bowels and bladder. She wore a catheter full time with a legbag and wasnt embarrassed about explaining it although it did make me a little uncomfortable when she talked about it. She told me to ask her about anything I wanted to know which I thought was cool. This was long before the Internet, so it wasnt easy to learn things like what she told me and whats in this video.

I used to hang out with a girl who was paraplegic from a car accident. She always had empty soda bottles with her, and would empty her legbag into one and just toss it in a trash can. She said she couldnt cath intermittently but didnt tell me why. She wore her legbag on her left lower leg so she also could just open her car door, lift her leg out and empty it on the ground. She was very well adapted to her life as a low-level paraplegic as I remember she had a lumbar-level injury.. She taught me a lot about spinal cord injury and its effects, as I had no idea it affected anything besides her legs.

Now, I’m going have to figure out what a Foley is. I only learned about catheters in general about a year ago. Previously I had no idea that a paraplegic lost normal control of the bladder and bowels - what an eye-opener!

9:45 This is such an interesting concept "Doing this thing the usual way(toilet) is difficult for me, but I've found a way to make it easy, and now the unusual way (car, roadside etc), that other might struggle with is just as easy for me" As an autistic person, I have the same experience with eye contact. Normal eye contact is a bit difficult to do, but with the training I have, I can do it, and I can just as easily maintain eye contact so intense that it makes everyone else uneasy

Has been interesting and fun; i'm a punk so... i just call the things by it's name, i'm way less "polite" in person than online.

Brittney, I was reading something earlier today from a friend of a new friend of ours. I’m not sure I was getting the whole idea. Are Pressure Wounds more of a problem for people if they are thinner, I.e., as they lose weight?

I was thinking proper overalls, and then I realised putting them on and taking them off would be a proper pain in the arse!!!! P’raps get hubby to make you a “wheel through” wheel wash for your chair. I seriously have never even sat in a wheelchair (as best as I recall) but in my industry, wheel washes are common place and immensely effective. Just a thought. Also, your gloves might be very counterproductive due to the sweat……which would be a germination place for all sorts of nasties, methinks. I have to wear protective gloves a lot and basically replace them almost daily for that reason.

Guess what, Brit? I detest gardening. If I had my rathers, my entire gardens would be concrete!!!!! I probably learnt some ……unexpected …… facts!!!!!!

It's amazing how far tech has come in helping to make life easier for those in need. We're waiting for the day when they conquer the spinal cord itself and return everyone back to normal function. ❤

The only pressure sore I've gotten thus far [after 23 years] was in the hospital under the care of incompetent strangers. I'm not defining all medical community workers because some are completely awesome. However, some are only there for a paycheck, and they're the dangerous ones. After a major surgery, they placed my unconscious body in the same position on a solid mattress for many hours. Why they don't place unconscious patients on an alternating pressure mattress after surgery is COMPLETELY BEYOND MY SCOPE OF UNDERSTANDING... ❤

I know that some were born with this dreaded condition, but most had it thrust upon them. We need to allocate a term that describes a "victim of circumstance." Not one person, in their right mind, would choose this nightmare in human flesh. The body was designed to function as a complete unit. The immaterial spirit/mind communicates with the material brain and directs the machine [physical body] through instruction. When the machine no longer functions correctly, it becomes a type of prison. The key to not being held prisoner is in freeing the mind, the eternal part of us that transcends this 3-dimensional reality. ❤

Hey Britt and Fred, I really enjoyed this live video. I'm sorry I missed it when you two actually did it live. What time of day will you do it next Tuesday? I loved the section on terminology. There is only really one word truly bothers me and you both said it already, it's crippled. I guess in the 60s or early 70s it might have been okay but certainly now I think it sounds like an industrial term or something. When I was young I used to go to a Rehab Centre in Toronto to their Spina Bifida clinic and this Centre was called (at the time, 1983) the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre. I personally don't remember this because they actually changed names so many times throughout my growing up, the last one being Bloorview Kids Rehab Centre when I last went there around 20 years ago when I "became an adult". That would never be allowed now. I pretty much don't mind any other terms but yeah I do feel like a lot of people are just way too sensitive these days and just want something to complain about. Anyways, I look forward to these Tuesday Livestreams. This is so much fun.

About 1 week ago, the paralyzed girl I relay questions for to you stood up for herself in public for the 1st time. Someone pointed her out in a crowd and called her "differently abled". She roared back "no, she is paralyzed". Good for her.

I don’t like the use of retarded as a synonym of stupid either. When I was in high school I was partnered with a student who had severe cerebral palsy. I used the term retarded and her teacher aide gently explained why it was derogatory. It had a big effect on me and I haven’t used it since.

Given the amount of incredibly useful information she has provided since the start of this channel, it's hard to believe she doesn't have tons more subscribers.

Hello! Caster fork adjustment is a marketing thing from Ki, every wheelchair has some adjustability to basically ensure the caster is completely level. The ki rogue original just has an easier method of getting your castor level with an Allen key. Just a tad bit of over advertising. Ideally once it’s level DONT MOVE IT!

Hi. Thanks for the great overview. I am building a seat for my ATV, as a paraplegic with high risk of pressure sores due to some previous bad decisions. The seat is used max 5-6 hours at a time. Currently I have used memory foam for that, but it is getting really hot and it is not good for delicate/most high risk parts of my bottom. The foam is integrated under the regular seat cover of the ATV /where polyurethane foam is removed and replaced with a high layer of memory foam. What would be your suggestions for such a purpose, which is not a regular wheelchair but a seat for an ATV. - I've been thinking gel pad or gel foam, but maybe you have some concrete ideas and suggestions. For a wheelchair cushion I use ROHO air and it is presumably too unstable to integrate or use upon a ATV seat - also it can't be cut into shape as required.

Would wearing pants not help keeping your legs cleaner, I hope your not just wearing the apron.

You are peeing in your car, bed, chair, etc, wherever you happen to be. My concern is how sanitary is your catheter during such times. You are pushing, dust, dirt, bacteria, all the filthy things into your urethra, you will be getting UTI all year. You are doing intermittent catheter about 7-8 times a day, I can’t imagine the amount of damage, wear and tear on your urethra, opening your bladder sphincter all day, to remain open, causing leaks and other stuff. Even if you don’t feel the pain on your bladder, sphincter, urethra the damages is tremendous and the pain is there. How do you prevent pressure sores on your backside?

Um yah. I would weed whack the lawn and grass shaving all over my feet and chair and wheels. I would go in mud too. I would have to spend an additional 30 minutes cleaning everything. Thank God I had an air compressor for fast blowing. And the worst wheel you (me) can feel it. Itching grit. Tearing clothes dirty socks and shoes.... yup.
